Step 1: Open Run dialog (use Windows + R), type regedit.exe and then hit Enter key to launch Registry Editor.
Step 2: In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
Step 3: In the right pane, double-click on the entry named RPEnabled and change its value from 1 to 0 to enable the good old Start menu back in Windows 8.
You are done! To disable the old Start menu, simply change the value of RPEnabled key to 1. Please note that when you enable the old Start menu, the new Metro Start button goes invisible. That is, the old Start orb replaces the new Metro Start button. Thanks to FaiKee for the tip.
